Midnight (NIGHT) crypto surged 69.95% over the past week. NIGHT trades at $0.03933 on 24-hour volume of $100.5 million, which rose 85.46%, and the token now ranks 82nd by market capitalization at $653.26 million. A week ago it changed hands at $0.02298. The project has announced no release since July. The rally rests on a sector rotation and two social media posts.
What Is Midnight (NIGHT)?
Midnight is a privacy-focused sidechain of Cardano, built by Input Output, the engineering firm behind Cardano itself. It pairs shielded transactions with programmable smart contracts written in a language called Compact, and the design is built around selective disclosure, which lets a user prove a fact about their data without exposing the data itself. NIGHT is the network token.
Selective disclosure is the commercial pitch: prove a transaction met a rule without publishing the data behind it, which is the gap that has kept regulated users off public chains.
Why Privacy Coins Are Rallying
Privacy coin market capitalization reached $33.6 billion in September against roughly $7.1 billion a year earlier, and the group is up 213% measured from Bitcoin’s October 2025 peak, a level Bitcoin itself has not recovered.
Zcash (ZEC) drove most of it, gaining more than 2,100% over the year and accounting for roughly 62% of the sector on its own. Money rotating into privacy has to find somewhere to go beyond the leader, and that is the flow NIGHT has been catching.

Hoskinson Says Midnight Will Beat Zcash
On 28 September, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson posted: “Midnight will be bigger than ZCash: selective disclosure, Private Agents, Abstraction with a DeFi Kernel for all major chains, ZK + TEE + MPC, and Cardano’s 24/7 uptime combined with the magic of Leios. LFG 2027.”
That is a founder’s forecast on social media, not a company announcement, and the gap it describes is wide. Zcash carries a market capitalization of $24.08 billion and ranks ninth. Midnight is at $653.26 million and ranks 82nd, which makes Zcash about 37 times larger. Measured against Midnight’s fully diluted valuation of $943.92 million, Zcash is still 25 times the size.
Midnight Has Missed Its Own Q3 Deadline
Midnight’s roadmap runs in four named phases. Hilo delivered the token in December 2025 and Kūkolu brought a federated mainnet live on 31 March 2026, run by nine institutional validators. Mōhalu, due in the second and third quarters of 2026, was to open block production to Cardano stake pool operators, and Hua, due in the third quarter, was to complete the handover and decentralize the network.
The third quarter closed on 30 September with no announcement that either phase had shipped. The Midnight Foundation has published nothing on its news page since 21 July, and the roadmap timing now circulating has softened from firm quarters to mid-to-late 2026 for Mōhalu and late 2026 onward for Hua. The network still runs under federated governance.
Smart contracts sit in the same position. Cardano developer Sebastien Guillemot said on 19 September that they are expected on mainnet soon, including private custom token minting. That was a social post, not a release note, and it carried no date.
The Driver Behind the NIGHT Token Rally
NIGHT has roughly $2.1 million of order book depth sitting beneath a $653.26 million market capitalization, a liquidity-to-market-cap ratio of 0.32%. Daily volume of $100.5 million is 15.23% of that capitalization and close to fifty times the depth it passes through.
A book that thin is what makes a 70% week possible, and the same arithmetic runs in reverse: the money needed to lift NIGHT is the money needed to drop it. Only 14,880 addresses hold the token, so the price answers to a small number of sellers.
NIGHT Unlocks Run Until 4 December
Midnight’s circulating supply is 16.6 billion against a 24 billion maximum, so 7.4 billion tokens, 31% of the total, are yet to reach the market. Fully diluted valuation of $943.92 million sits 44% above the $653.26 million market capitalization.
Those 7.4 billion tokens come from an airdrop that has not finished releasing. NIGHT was distributed through the Glacier Drop, an airdrop across eight chains to wallets holding at least $100 at a June 2025 snapshot, with Cardano holders allocated 50% of the supply and Bitcoin holders 20%.
Each wallet has its own randomized first unlock date and then releases 25% of its allocation every 90 days, a structure the project said was meant to discourage dumping. The 360-day release period ends on 4 December 2026, and a 90-day grace period follows before the redemption portal closes. Holders have claimed 3.547 billion NIGHT from the Glacier Drop and 1 billion from the Scavenger Mine. Each release between now and December lands in a market with roughly $2.1 million of depth.

What NIGHT Holders Should Watch
Shipping Mōhalu and Hua would hand block production to the community and put a delivery record behind the roadmap. A mainnet date for smart contracts would do the same for the feature set. And a privacy sector that keeps rising without Zcash leading it would show the rotation is broad rather than one asset pulling the rest.
Until one of those arrives, NIGHT is priced on a sector rotation, a founder’s forecast for 2027, and a release schedule that runs to December.
