Crypto Markets React to Geopolitical Shock
Despite a string of positive announcements, the crypto market experienced intense volatility last week following a sudden spike in Middle East tensions. As Iran-Israel conflict escalated with airstrikes, investors rushed to safe havens like gold and oil, while Bitcoin dropped below $104K, triggering over $1.15B in liquidations on Thursday alone. For instance Binance saw a single $200M BTC long liquidation among the largest ever!
Across the board, 247,000 bitcoin traders were liquidated, underscoring just how fragile leverage-heavy markets can be during geopolitical escalations.
Relief Rally Fueled by Regulatory & Stablecoin Momentum
Despite the dump, markets clawed back over the weekend, thanks to:
- SEC Chair Atkins’ DeFi Pivot: In a major tone shift, Atkins backed self-custody and DeFi freedom as “foundational American values,” hinting at potential exemptions for decentralized platforms.
- Stablecoin Acceleration: Treasury Secretary Bessent projected the USD stablecoin market to hit $2 trillion by 2028, up from $260B. The Senate is now preparing a final vote on the GENIUS stablecoin bill this week. FYI, Stablecoin market cap hit a record $250B, now accounting for 7.24% of total crypto market cap!

- Shopify teamed up with Coinbase & Stripe to enable USDC payments
