RippleX released version 1.1 of its XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit on 17 September 2026, introducing integration for the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open framework co-authored by payments corporation Stripe and payments-focused network Tempo. The integration provides software scaffolding for autonomous agents to execute XRP AI payments alongside settlement in RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin. However, the tool remains in beta, with no enterprise clients publicly announced and no commercial processing volume disclosed to date.

What Shipped in the Version 1.1 Release

The developer kit update introduces two distinct technical specifications.

            • The first is the Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, a standard co-authored by payments company Stripe and Tempo, a blockchain built for payments.
            • The second is the Open Wallet Standard, which lets software manage wallets across multiple blockchains through one interface.

The Open Wallet Standard also handles permissions. Agents can request transactions without holding private keys, and the software enforces spending limits and approved destinations. RippleX head of product Jazzi Cooper said the goal is to make XRP and RLUSD first-class options wherever developers are building.

            How Machine-to-Machine Payments Settle

An AI agent needs continuous external inputs, such as specialized LLM inference, API queries, or cloud compute cycles, requiring programmatic, low-friction settlement methods. Under MPP, a service responds to a request with a price, the agent authorizes payment, and the service delivers the resource. Settlement happens in XRP or in ledger-issued tokens such as RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin.

The problem this solves is narrow and real. An agent buying data or computing power needs both a currency the seller accepts and software that can send it, and until now those choices were made separately.

            Payment Channels: Enabling Sub-Cent Microtransactions

XRP payment gateways are the piece that separates this from a proof of concept. An agent can deposit XRP once, run hundreds of paid queries in a session, and authorize a little more spending after each answer, while the provider collects the accumulated total without writing every query to the blockchain.

That creates a specific job for XRP as money set aside for a session. It also creates a limit, because the session feature currently requires XRP. Individual payments already support RLUSD, but extending sessions to stablecoins depends on a proposed ledger upgrade that has not shipped.

Dual-Standard Distribution: Backing Both MPP and x402

Rather than committing exclusively to one framework, Ripple has adopted a multi-standard integration strategy. The team added support for the HTTP 402-based x402 standard in June 2026 and has maintained that capability alongside the September addition of MPP.

That is a distribution decision, not a partnership. Teams building agent services typically pick a payment standard before they pick a blockchain, so supporting both puts the XRP Ledger inside conversations it would otherwise miss. The competition is moving the same way, with other networks racing to power agent payments.

            Commercial Limits and Adoption Realities

The software is in beta. Ripple’s announcement names no company using the MPP integration commercially and gives no payment volume for it, which means the distribution is built and the demand is unproven.

The wider agent payments market also still runs mostly on USDC, a position this release does not change on its own. XRP trades at $1.61, up 7.96% over 24 hours and 24.52% over the week, though that move came days after the release and reflects broader market strength.

            FAQs

            1. What is the Machine Payments Protocol?

The Machine Payments Protocol, or MPP, is a standard co-authored by Stripe and Tempo that lets AI agents pay for online services automatically. A service returns a price, the agent authorizes payment, and the resource is delivered. Ripple added support for it in version 1.1 of its XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit.

            2. Can AI agents pay in XRP now?

AI agents can pay in XRP and RLUSD through the updated XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit, released on 17 September. The software is in beta, and Ripple has not named any company using it commercially or disclosed any payment volume.

            3. Does RLUSD work for recurring agent payments?

RLUSD supports one-time payments today but not recurring payment sessions. Those sessions rely on XRP payment channels, and extending them to stablecoins such as RLUSD depends on a proposed XRP Ledger upgrade that has not been implemented.

            4. Why did Ripple support both x402 and MPP?

Ripple supports both standards to reach developers using either one. It added x402 in June and MPP in September, betting on neither, because teams building agent services usually choose a payment standard before choosing a blockchain.
