The Purge aims to reduce historical data storage and substantially decrease the hard disk requirements for node operators, thereby alleviating the technical burden on the Ethereum protocol.

Buterin highlighted the introduction of Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-6780 during the Ethereum Dencun hard fork, which eliminated a significant portion of the “SELFDESTRUCT” code functions. This move simplified the protocol by reducing complexity and introducing new security measures.
Following the implementation of EIP-6780, each Ethereum block is expected to accommodate a greater number of storage slots due to the removal of certain SELFDESTRUCT functions. Buterin expressed optimism about the potential elimination of the SELFDESTRUCT code entirely in the future through a new EIP.
The Purge will introduce history expiration via EIP-4444 to regulate the amount of historical data stored. Nodes will have the option to prune historical blocks older than a year, significantly reducing storage requirements. Historical data will only be necessary when synchronizing with the head of the chain or upon specific request.
By confirming fresh blocks, fully synced nodes will no longer require historical data exceeding 365 days, potentially enhancing Ethereum’s node decentralization.
Buterin also revealed that Geth, Ethereum’s Go implementation client, has streamlined its codebase by dropping support for pre-Merge (PoW) networks, resulting in the deletion of thousands of lines of code. Post-Dencun, a storage window of 18 days for blobs will reduce node data bandwidth to 50 gigabytes, further optimizing network performance.
Additionally, Buterin emphasized the necessity of purging precompiled Ethereum contracts, which implement complex forms of cryptography beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine’s capabilities. Despite their previous significance, these contracts have become a source of consensus bugs and complications for new EVM implementations due to declining demand.
