Soon after the announcement from Polygon about launching the zkEVM on its mainnet comes in, on February 2023, a partnership with Immutable labs comes in for the Web3 gaming world! With the introduction of the ‘Immutable zkEVM‘ gaming developers of the Web3 will now be able to build on a new zkEVM or zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine which is aimed to increase the ownership rights for players along with taking on the big gaming corporations.
This partnership is between two Layer 2 Ethereum firms creating a combined product; “Immutable zkEVM”. This will be Polygon powered zkEVM which is fully supported by the Immutable’s Web3 game development platform. The launch of the zkEVM by Polygon is set for a mainnet launch on March 27, 2023. This new feature is something that will enable the validation of mass amounts of transaction data by gathering them together into one transaction. Once the transaction is confirmed on the Ethereum network, it gets executed. This same technology will also be featuring on the Immutable’s zkEVM solution.

How it started vs how it’s going.
We won’t stop until digital property rights for gamers are the expectation – not a headline. pic.twitter.com/uac4VHODBA
— Robbie Ferguson 🅧 | Immutable (@0xferg) March 15, 2023
In a different statement, Ferguson also mentioned that there are a huge bunch of in-game skins, which is worth around billions of dollars worth that is sold each year with no rights to players. This Immutable zkEVM is going to bring a solution to that. He stated, “We’re changing that so players are in control, and ownership is the expectation.”
Ryan Wyatt, the President of Polygon labs stated that, “This massively simplifies the choices for developers and helps us focus on what really matters — which is taking on the huge incumbents who are exploiting players on a daily basis.” He also mentioned that, this technology will allow game developers to focus on building a game, instead of needing them to divert resources toward building the game on-chain.

Wyatt also mentioned that, even though the two partners are competitors, the combined outcome of the technology being able to help the gamers and the game developers quickly aligned them to work together.
Note: Polygon and Immutable are not merging. Both of them will continue with their respective projects and initiatives.
Ferguson also added that he hopes for the success of this platform to mean that the “digital property rights in the game are the norm” so that the games are owned by all the players, who are part of the game, rather than the giant corporations.
