AVAX rallied more than 11% on 20 September while Bitcoin fell, and the Helicon upgrade activates at 15:00 UTC, 8:30 PM IST, on 22 September. About $13.9 million in short orders is stacked above $10, with targets as high as $17.
AVAX Rallied 11% While Bitcoin Fell
AVAX gained more than 11% on 20 September as Bitcoin slid toward $80,000 in a selloff tied to geopolitical tensions. The Avalanche AVAX price today is $11.14, down 1.52% after touching $11.80. AVAX last closed a day above $11.40 on 29 January, at $12.13, so the move took it to its highest level in nearly eight months.
The New York Stock Exchange has spent about a year testing Avalanche for a regulated tokenized-securities platform, Ava Labs’ president said on 19 September, though no provider has been selected. A day earlier, Grove and Janus Henderson said they would co-lead a $250 million initiative to fund tokenized credit on the network.
Avalanche’s Helicon Mainnet Activates at 15:00 UTC on 22 September
Helicon goes live on mainnet at 11:00 AM ET, 15:00 UTC or 8:30 PM IST, on 22 September. The Avalanche network upgrade has run on the Fuji testnet since 28 July, bundles six Avalanche Community Proposals, and requires validators to run AvalancheGo v1.15.0 before activation.
The minimum staking duration falls from 336 hours to 48, validator stakes can auto-renew with rewards compounding each cycle, and the uptime needed to earn rewards rises from 80% to 90%. The C-Chain also moves to continuous execution, running consensus and execution in parallel.
The AVAX Upgrade Cuts Staking Yields Over 90 Days
Helicon lowers the overall annualized staking reward rate from about 5.4% to 4%, phased in over roughly 90 days after activation. The reward rate declines in a straight line, so yields step down gradually instead of dropping at 15:00 UTC.
The shortest-duration rate falls by about 1.3 percentage points while the one-year rate stays where it is, widening the gap between them from roughly 1 point to 2.3. Ava Labs estimates annual AVAX inflation falls by 0.5 to 1 percentage point as a result.
None of these changes touch AVAX held on an exchange or in a wallet; they apply only to validators and delegators who stake directly.
$13.9 Million in Short Orders Sits Above $10
Two addresses linked to NMTD, founder of HyBridge and Borsa, placed about $13.9 million in laddered short orders on AVAX within the same minute on 20 September. The orders were stacked after AVAX broke $10, with targets as high as $17. AVAX now trades inside that band, so each step higher meets resting supply.
Spot ETFs are not absorbing that supply: products tracking Avalanche and five other large-cap tokens drew under $4.8 million in net inflows last week. Exchange trading is carrying the rally.
AVAX Faces $12.13 Next, With $10 as Support
The first level overhead is $12.13, the 29 January close. The session high of $11.80 stopped 2.7% short of it, and the low of $10.895 held above the $10 to $10.50 zone where the short ladder begins.

AVAX trades 28.7% above its 200-day exponential moving average at $8.656, but the 20-day at $8.395 still sits below the 200-day. A downtrend structure holds until that cross happens. The 14-day RSI reads 81.08 against a signal line of 60.67.
The 24 hours after 15:00 UTC on 22 September carry the sell-the-news risk: short orders rest overhead, and yields on short stakes are set to fall. That window will show whether this rally was positioning for the event or demand that outlasts it.
FAQs
1. Why did AVAX rally ahead of the Helicon mainnet?
AVAX rallied ahead of the Helicon mainnet on two catalysts: the Avalanche network upgrade activating on 22 September, and news that the NYSE has spent about a year testing Avalanche for tokenized securities. AVAX gained more than 11% on 20 September while Bitcoin fell, and trades at $11.14.
2. When does the AVAX Helicon mainnet go live?
The Helicon mainnet goes live at 15:00 UTC on 22 September 2026, which is 11:00 AM ET and 8:30 PM IST. Validators must run AvalancheGo v1.15.0 before then.
3. Do AVAX holders need to do anything for the AVAX upgrade?
AVAX holders do not need to do anything for the AVAX upgrade. Tokens held on exchanges or in wallets are unaffected, and only validators must upgrade their node software before activation.
4. How does Helicon change AVAX staking rewards?
Helicon cuts the overall annualized AVAX staking reward rate from about 5.4% to 4%, phased in over roughly 90 days. The shortest-duration rate falls by about 1.3 percentage points while the one-year rate is unchanged, and the minimum staking duration drops from 336 hours to 48.
