Alphabet Earnings Report Q3 2026: Cloud Doubles, but Search Miss and Cash Burn Weigh on the Stock
Alphabet announced its Q3 2026 financial results on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after the close of the US trading session. For traders in India, headline numbers crossed the wires at roughly 1:30 AM IST on October 29, followed by the management earnings call at 2:00 AM IST. Ahead of the release, we outlined expectations and key risk thresholds in our Alphabet Q3 2026 earnings preview.
Consolidated revenue came in at $127.58 billion, up 25% year on year, and fell about $640 million short of the $128.22 billion consensus compiled by LSEG. Adjusted EPS of $2.67 missed Wall Street’s $3.02 forecast, marking what financial media characterized as Alphabet’s first simultaneous miss on both lines in nearly four years.
While Google Cloud revenue doubled to $30.71 billion (up 103%), core Search and other revenue growth moderated to 12%, missing analyst estimates. Operating margin settled at 31.8%, compressing from 34.0% in Q2, and quarterly free cash flow remained in negative territory at -$9.07 billion as capex expanded to $51.36 billion.
Alphabet shares fell between 8% and 11% in extended after-hours trading, outpacing the 6.0% to 6.4% move implied by the options market prior to the report. The regular US trading session opens at 7:00 PM IST on October 29.

Alphabet Financial Results: Strong Growth, Weaker Earnings Quality
Alphabet’s operational metrics show healthy top-line expansion and solid core operating profit alongside weaker GAAP net earnings quality and sustained cash flow pressure.
Operating income climbed 30% year on year to $40.58 billion, expanding operating margin to 31.8% compared to 30.5% in Q3 2025. However, this represented sequential margin compression from 34.0% in Q2 2026 and 36.1% in Q1 2026.
Reported net income declined 25% year on year to $26.2 billion due to an $8.66 billion mark-to-market loss on Alphabet’s equity securities portfolio, contrasting with a $99.0 billion non-cash gain recognized in Q2. As a result, reported GAAP EPS of $2.12 sat $0.55 below adjusted EPS of $2.67.
Core operating earnings demonstrated resilience, but the revenue shortfall, adjusted EPS miss, and ongoing cash burn dictated market direction.
Prior Quarter Snapshot: Alphabet Q2 2026
Alphabet’s Q2 results, reported on July 22, established the baseline for this print. At the time, the stock slipped 7.1% the following day as aggressive capex and negative free cash flow overshadowed 82% Cloud revenue growth.
| Metric | Actual (Q2 2026) | Estimate | Beat / Miss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $119.8B (+24% YoY) | $116.9B | Beat by about 2.5% |
| Diluted EPS | $9.11 ($2.85 excluding a large equity gain) | $2.88 | Reported beat came from the gain, and about 1% below excluding it |
| Operating margin | 34% | Not available | Up from 32% a year earlier |
| Google Cloud revenue | $24.8B (+82% YoY), operating income $8.8B | Not available | Not available |
| Capex | $44.9B | Not available | Doubled from $22.4B a year earlier |
| Free cash flow | Negative $5.9B | Not available | First negative quarter |
| Stock reaction | -7.1% next session | Not available | Cash flow drag outweighed Cloud growth |

The Numbers That Actually Mattered
Four operational areas drove the post-earnings repricing: Search advertising momentum, Google Cloud margins and backlog, capital expenditures and cash burn, and unallocated corporate research overhead.
Search and Other Revenue Slowed to 12% Growth and Missed Estimates
Search and other advertising revenue came in at $63.35 billion, up 12% from $56.57 billion a year earlier, trailing the Street consensus of roughly $64.85 billion. This marks a deceleration from 17% growth in Q2 and 19% in Q1. Search now represents 49.7% of Alphabet’s consolidated revenue.
YouTube ad revenue reached $11.21 billion, up 9% year on year compared to 13% in Q2, while total Google Services revenue reached $96.3 billion (up 11%), missing the $98.5 billion consensus.
Management stated that overall Search query volumes grew at their fastest rate in five years, but average monetization per query lagged because AI Mode queries generate lower revenue than traditional search ad units. Alphabet confirmed it has begun deploying ad inventory inside AI Overviews and AI Mode globally, while YouTube Music and Premium passed 150 million subscribers, including trial accounts.
Google Cloud Grew 103% With a 36.2% Operating Margin
Google Cloud revenue reached $30.71 billion, surging 103% year on year and surpassing the $28.7 billion consensus expectation. Operating income for the cloud division rose to $11.12 billion from $3.59 billion in Q3 2025, lifting segment operating margin from 23.7% to 36.2%.
Custom Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) hardware sales to third-party data centers contributed meaningfully to top-line performance, though management noted that core cloud infrastructure and software consumption remained strong excluding hardware shipments.
Cloud contract backlog closed the quarter at $561 billion, up roughly 9% from $514 billion at the end of Q2, with management projecting that over 55% of this backlog will convert to recognized revenue over the next 24 months.
Capex Hit $51.4 Billion and Free Cash Flow Turned Negative Again
Alphabet spent $51.36 billion on capital expenditures, which is 114% above the $23.95 billion of a year ago and below the $55.09 billion analysts expected. Free cash flow was negative $9.07 billion, the second negative quarter in a row, and subtracting that figure from capex gives implied operating cash flow of about $42.3 billion. Long-term debt rose to $125.1 billion from $21.6 billion a year earlier, according to CNBC.
About 65% of the quarter’s technical infrastructure investment went to servers and networking equipment, which generally have useful lives of about six years. Alphabet kept its 2026 capex range at $195 billion to $205 billion, and the company said the build of TPU system inventory will add further pressure to free cash flow.
Costs Rose by $3.2 Billion and Offset Services Profit Growth
Google Services operating income grew 17% to $39.16 billion, outpacing its 11% revenue growth. However, corporate-level research and developmental overhead absorbed much of that operational leverage.
Unallocated Alphabet-level activities, which house shared foundational AI research and developmental infrastructure, generated an operating loss of $7.66 billion compared to $4.47 billion in Q3 2025, representing an expense increase of $3.19 billion. Other Bets posted an operating loss of $2.05 billion on $372 million in revenue.
Quarterly Trend: Alphabet
The quarterly trend table below shows five quarters of Alphabet’s revenue, Search growth, Cloud growth, operating margin and reported EPS, and it shows Search growth falling to the lowest rate of the period while Cloud growth has roughly tripled.
| Quarter | Revenue | YoY Growth | Search Growth | Cloud Growth | Operating Margin | Reported EPS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q3 2025 | $102.35B | +16% | +15% | +34% | 30.5% | $2.87 |
| Q4 2025 | $113.8B | +18% | +17% | +48% | 31.6% | $2.82 |
| Q1 2026 | $109.9B | +22% | +19% | +63% | 36.1% | $5.11 |
| Q2 2026 | $119.8B | +24% | +17% | +82% | 34.0% | $9.11 |
| Q3 2026 | $127.58B | +25% | +12% | +103% | 31.8% | $2.12 |

Reported EPS in Q1 and Q2 2026 includes other income gains of $37.7 billion and $98.0 billion, primarily from equity securities, while Q3 2026 includes an $8.66 billion loss on equity securities per CNBC. The Q3 2025 operating margin is calculated from operating income and revenue.
What Management Said and What It Changes
During the conference call, executive management addressed the lag in Search ad monetization, defended high capital spending, and signaled that margins and free cash flow will face continued headwinds into Q4.
- Revenue Run Rate and Scale: CEO Sundar Pichai stated that Alphabet has achieved an annualized revenue run rate of half a trillion dollars (~$510 billion based on Q3 revenue). He highlighted widespread enterprise demand for TPU infrastructure, noted that the Gemini app surpassed one billion users, and confirmed that first-party model APIs process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute (more than 4x year-ago volume).
- Search Integration: Management characterized AI Mode and traditional search results as a unified product, noting that most AI Mode queries are incremental to overall search usage. Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler pointed out that YouTube subscription revenue is expanding faster than advertising, with brand integrations leading ad growth.
- Compute Constraints and Capex: CFO Anat Ashkenazi disclosed that Alphabet began utilizing third-party compute infrastructure in late Q3 and will expand third-party compute sourcing in Q4 due to internal hardware constraints, which is expected to create near-term margin pressure in Google Cloud. She also confirmed that capital expenditures will increase significantly in 2027, with formal guidance provided during the Q4 call.
The Shift in Market Debate: The report resolved questions regarding cloud enterprise demand, backed by 103% revenue growth and a $561 billion backlog. The primary debate now shifts to how quickly ad monetization inside AI Mode can reaccelerate Search growth, and the scale of capital expenditure commitments Alphabet will make in 2027 before returning to free-cash-flow positive operations.
Guidance: Q4 2026 and Full Year
Alphabet does not provide revenue or EPS guidance, so its outlook comes from management commentary on capital spending, Cloud, free cash flow and currency.
| Guidance Metric | Value | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2026 revenue and EPS | Not guided | No formal guidance |
| 2026 capex | $195B to $205B | Unchanged from July, when it was raised from $180B to $190B |
| 2027 capex | To increase significantly, with details on the Q4 call | Open-ended. CNBC and Fortune cite about $300B as the expected level. |
| Google Cloud | TPU system sales to keep scaling in Q4, with a meaningful revenue ramp in 2027 | Near-term margin pressure from third-party compute usage |
| Free cash flow | Under pressure from capex and the TPU inventory build | Negative for a second quarter in a row |
| Currency | Slightly larger FX headwind in Q4 than in Q3 | Adds to Q4 growth comparisons |
| Google Services | Q4 growth faces a tougher comparison | Search accelerated in Q3 2025, which makes the year-ago base harder |

How Alphabet Q3 2026 Earnings Impact the Stock: Trader’s Takeaway
GOOGL shares fell 8% to 11% in extended trading on October 28, surpassing the 6.0% to 6.4% options-implied move and the 7.1% post-earnings decline in Q2. Market participants reacted to the decelerating growth in Search and YouTube, two consecutive quarters of negative cash flow, and management’s commitment to higher 2027 capex. The sell-off also followed five consecutive down sessions heading into the release.
Bullish Scenarios
If Google Cloud sustains revenue growth above 90% with mid-30% operating margins, and management provides clearer capex guardrails during the Q4 call, institutional investors may view the current pullback as a temporary ad monetization timing lag.
On an eventual recovery, the first technical level to reclaim is $335.72, followed by overhead resistance at $344.78. The $561 billion cloud backlog, with over 55% scheduled for delivery over the next 24 months, offers long-term operational support.
Bearish Scenarios
If Search advertising growth slows further into single digits, free cash flow remains negative through year-end, or 2027 capital expenditure guidance approaches $300 billion without immediate revenue offsets, the stock faces downside pressure.
Traders should monitor immediate technical support at $315.29, followed by the $297.45 to $300.00 demand shelf. An 8% to 11% drawdown from the pre-earnings reference price puts initial cash session pricing in the $285 to $295 zone, where price discovery will settle once the regular US session opens.
For Indian traders, post-earnings price action on GOOGL is reflected in CoinDCX US Stock Futures from approximately 1:30 AM IST on October 29, before Indian equity markets open at 9:15 AM IST. Liquidity is usually thinner outside regular US hours, so an after-hours move can reverse once the US session opens at 7:00 PM IST, and the next checkpoint is the fourth-quarter report expected in early February 2027, where Alphabet has said it will give 2027 capex details.

Alphabet Earnings Surprise History
Alphabet’s reported EPS beat consensus in each of the three quarters before this one, but the first two of those beats came from large equity gains, which is why the stock’s reaction has followed Cloud growth and capital spending more closely than the EPS line.
