The Stacks (STX) price surge came after its second Bitcoin bond filled its 500 BTC capacity, according to Stacks Labs CEO Muneeb Ali. STX is up 8.22% this week at $0.4069. The bond is twice the size of the first one, but the amount of STX it ties up is small next to the token’s $738 million market value.

Stacks (STX) traded at $0.4069 on Tuesday, up 4.67% in 24 hours and 8.22% over the week.

Stacks is a network that adds apps and payments on top of Bitcoin. Its second Bitcoin bond sold out on October 12, according to Ali, roughly a month after the first.

How Do Stacks Bitcoin Bonds Work?

A Stacks Bitcoin bond lets holders lock their BTC for six months and earn a target yield of about 3%, paid in BTC. The coins stay on the Bitcoin network the whole time, so holders earn the yield without moving them anywhere else.

There is one condition that matters for STX. Bond holders must also hold STX worth about 5% of the BTC they lock, so every bond that fills creates some demand for the token.

Stacks’ Second Bond Is Twice the Size of the First

The first bond opened on September 10 and drew about 230 BTC, with institutions including 21Shares and HashKey Cloud among its participants. The second round had room for 500 BTC, more than double that amount.

The buyers also changed. Most of the second bond’s capacity went to StackingDAO, a service that lets smaller holders pool their BTC and receive a token called stBTC in return. That opens the bonds to everyday Bitcoin holders as well as the large firms that filled the first round.

How Much STX Do the Bitcoin Bonds Lock Up?

Ali said about 45 million more STX was locked during this cycle, but only about 6 million of it is tied to the bond. At today’s price, that bond-linked amount is worth about $2.4 million, less than 0.5% of STX’s $738 million market cap.

STX also has no maximum supply. New tokens are created to reward the miners who run the network, so any STX the bonds lock up has to be weighed against that steady issuance.

Trading activity behind the STX price rally is healthy but not extreme. Daily volume of $94.9 million is about 13% of the market cap, a sign of real interest without the frantic turnover seen in smaller tokens recently.

Read what Muneeb Ali’s return as Stacks CEO means for STX.

Where STX Stands After the Second Bond

The second Bitcoin bond doubled the opening day and filled within the next few days, which shows there is demand for earning BTC yield through Stacks. The STX tied to it is still small, at about $2.4 million. For the STX price rally to last, the bigger question is whether future bond rounds keep growing in size, because that is what would turn the 5% STX requirement into meaningful demand.
