SpaceX disclosed a $540 million decline in the value of its bitcoin holdings in its first quarterly report as a public company, taking the position from $1.64 billion to $1.10 billion. The filing also revealed it holds 18,712 BTC, more than double what on-chain trackers had attributed to it. Bitcoin barely moved; SpaceX shares fell 6%.
SpaceX Bitcoin Markdown: What the Filing Shows
The SpaceX Bitcoin markdown is an accounting entry, not a sale. SpaceX still holds all 18,712 BTC. Bitcoin traded near $64,387, up about 0.6% over 24 hours, showing no reaction to the disclosure. SpaceX stock fell 6% in extended trading on 4 August, on a day the Nasdaq 100 rose 3.3%.

Why SpaceX’s Bitcoin Loss Hit Its Stock, Not BTC
The $540M Bitcoin markdown produced a 6% drop in the company’s own equity and no measurable move in bitcoin itself. That is what a paper loss looks like when no coins change hands. There was no supply hitting the market, so there was nothing for bitcoin to price. The volatility travelled from bitcoin into the stock, not the other way around.
The rest of the quarter was strong. Revenue reached $7.8 billion against a $6.9 billion consensus and adjusted EBITDA nearly tripled to $3.5 billion. The $541 million net loss almost exactly matches the $540 million bitcoin decline, so operations were close to breakeven without it.
New Accounting Rules Made the Bitcoin Loss Visible
The BTC loss reflects a rule change as much as a price change. Under FASB ASU 2023-08, effective for fiscal years starting after 15 December 2024, companies must report crypto at market value each quarter, with gains and losses both flowing through the income statement.
The previous model only worked one way. Companies wrote bitcoin down to its lowest price during a quarter and could never write it back up, which is how Strategy reported a $670 million impairment for a quarter in which bitcoin finished higher than it started.
The consequence is symmetry. SpaceX’s holdings fell from $1.64 billion to $1.10 billion as bitcoin dropped from roughly $87,600 at the end of December to about $58,800 at the end of June. If bitcoin returns to that December level, the same rules produce a gain of similar size.
SpaceX Doubled Its Bitcoin Holdings Into the Drawdown
The filing disclosed 18,712 BTC. On-chain analytics had tracked 8,285 BTC to SpaceX wallets as recently as May, a figure unchanged since June 2022, meaning roughly 10,427 coins were added around the company’s IPO.
The company has not explained the increase. It could reflect IPO proceeds allocated to treasury, bitcoin taken as payment for services, or wallets analytics firms had never attributed to it. What the filing establishes is that corporate bitcoin exposure can be materially larger than on-chain trackers suggest.

What Bitcoin Traders Should Watch Next
At current prices SpaceX’s position is worth roughly $1.18 billion, so every 1% move in bitcoin shifts its reported earnings by about $11.8 million. Strategy holds around 580,000 BTC, where the same 1% move is worth roughly $365 million.
Two dates matter. Around 912 million SpaceX shares became eligible for sale on 6 August, and bitcoin’s level feeds directly into how holders price that unlock. Beyond that, watch whether the disclosure slows corporate bitcoin buying, since every future quarterly report now carries the same visible swing.
Corporate Bitcoin Holdings: The Bottom Line
A $540 million markdown with no coins sold says little about supply and a lot about how corporate balance sheets now display crypto. The market treated it that way, marking down the equity and leaving bitcoin alone. Treasury disclosures of this kind move stocks first, and reach bitcoin only if a company actually sells.
