
Zcash has activated Ironwood, sealing the Orchard shielded pool that has handled its private transactions since 2022. The upgrade answers a soundness flaw disclosed in June by forcing every exit from the old pool through a public accounting checkpoint, making circulating supply verifiable again. Why Zcash Rebuilt Its Privacy Layer
Security researcher Taylor Hornby reported a soundness flaw in Orchard’s zero-knowledge circuit on 29 May. The bug had been present since Orchard launched in 2022 and could in principle have let an attacker mint ZEC with no public trace.
Developers responded with a soft fork that suspended Orchard activity, then the NU6.2 hard fork on 3 June to correct the circuit. ZODL and Shielded Labs both said they found no evidence the flaw was used.
The catch is that Orchard’s privacy makes the absence of an exploit impossible to prove. Ironwood closes that gap rather than patching code again. The new pool reuses Orchard’s Action design and Halo2 proving system but starts from a fresh state, and the old pool takes no new deposits and allows no internal transfers. ZEC price fell close to 50% after the June disclosure, from about $602 to roughly $299, then recovered through July, reclaiming $500 and touching about $552 mid-month.
The run-up was quiet. ZEC changed hands in the $490 to $505 area on Monday, down around 0.5% over 24 hours, with a market cap near $8.5 billion. Analyst Kyle du Plessis said ZEC would need to reclaim $530, a level visible on the ZEC/USDT pair, to show the market had written off exploitation risk.
