Macro Overview
This week saw announcements related to Fed Chair Powell’s Speech, U.S. Durable Goods order MoM, BRICS Summit, & US Initial Jobless claims.
- Fed Chair Powell is concerned about high inflation and is considering raising rates. Although there’s progress, inflation remains uncomfortably high. Powell’s speech is reminiscent of his earlier remarks about managing inflation. With a strong economy and slower inflation, the Fed can be cautious in upcoming meetings. From a cryptocurrency standpoint, this is viewed as unfavorable news.
- US Initial jobless claims that measure the number of individuals who filed for unemployment insurance for the first time during the past week came at 230K, less than the estimation of 240K. This is not an encouraging sign for crypto, since the dollar is inversely correlated to crypto.
- The latest report on US Durable Goods Orders shows a decrease of 5.2% month-over-month, compared to the forecasted decline of 4.1%. The previous month had seen an increase of 4.6%.
- The BRICS economic bloc has opted to abandon the use of the US dollar for trade settlements, as part of their strategy to promote international usage of local currencies. Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, confirmed this move and announced the expansion of the alliance by six countries by 2024.
Next week’s major callouts include the US JOLTs Job Openings, US Prelim GDP q/q, US Core PCE Price Index m/m, US Non-Farm Employment Change & US Unemployment Rate announcement.
